Positive Psychology for Coaches: How to Use the Emerging Science of Wellbeing to Help you Clients Flourish
Positive Psychology is the scientific study of well-being. Founded only ten years ago by psychologist Martin Seligman, this emerging field studies the mechanisms and tools that enable individuals and groups to flourish. Positive Psychology distinguishes itself from clinical psychology, which has traditionally focused on healing mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, and other pathologies. Rather than fixing what is wrong with an individual, positive psychology aims to promote and strengthen what is right in non-clinical populations. While the talk will include a brief introduction to the scientific and philosophical foundations of the field, it will primarily consist of several examples of practical, interactive exercises that coaches can use with their own clients. Applications and techniques for both individual and corporate coaching will be covered.
· How to coach to a client's strengths using the VIA-IS Strengths assessment
· How to use postive emotion to increase a client's insight, awareness, and open-mindendess in a coaching session
· How and why to rephrase avoidance goals as approach goals
· How to help clients improve their job satisfaction by focusing on improving specific character strengths
· Why interpersonal relationships are critical to wellbeing, and how to help clients improve them
· How to use peak-end theory to increase a client's satisfaction with coaching sessions.
